| Introduction Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there . If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea ,even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. (Psalm 139:7-12) Hi my name is Ashley Eaton and I have been asked to “Explain the meaning and significance of the omnipresence of God.” According to Grudem’s Systematic theology omnipresence is: The doctrine that God does not have size or spatial dimensions and is present at every point of space with his whole being, yet God acts differently in different places. Or more simply put, God exists everywhere at the same time. To elucidate what this implies I will present 4 aspects of omnipresence • first will be God Is Everywhere Present, • second God's Form Is Not Spread Out, • third Nobody Can Hide From God, • fourth that This Is A Comforting Truth For The Believer. God Is Everywhere Present MacArthur wrote “the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain God. He is omnipresent. There is no realm in which His presence does not reach. Imagine children lined up in the cafeteria of a religious school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The teacher made a note: "Take only one, God is watching." At the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A little boy wrote a note: "Take all you want, God is watching the apples." This is not how God is, as there is no place he does not reach and have control of and knowledge of the goings-ons, The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3). God's Form Is Not Spread Out God is not stretched out so that different parts of him are in different locations of the universe, instead the whole of him exists in every location. He is everywhere in that everything is immediately at His fingertips and in His presence. At the same time he is present in the universe. In his book No One Like Him. John S. Feinberg writes, God doesn’t have one part of Himself at one place and another part at a different place. God transcends spatial limitations as so is present at all places at once in His total being. I wish to make a clear distinction here. The belief that God exists everywhere at the same time at the present is NOT the same as Pantheism- the belief that God is the same as the universe like New Age. The doctrine of the omnipresence of God says that he is present everywhere IN the universe- not that he IS the universe. Nobody Can Hide From God The prophet Amos records God as saying that no one can hide from Him: Though they dig into hell, from there my hand shall take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down; and though they hide themselves on top of Carmel, from there I will search and take them; though they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea, from there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them (Amos 9:2,3). Also Jonah he tried to escape from God, but God knew where he was. As Grudem puts it, “there is nowhere in the entire universe, on land or sea, in heaven or in hell, where one can flee from God’s presence.” The Bible is clear that there is not one place in the universe that is away from God's presence. His presence is everywhere. The fact that God is omnipresent is a constant source of comfort for believers. Wherever the believer may go, they will find themselves in the protection of God's presence. There is no place where a Christian can get away from God's reach. His presence may be experienced at any time and at any place. God has promised the believer that He is with them always. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you (Isaiah 43:2). In a world like this tears have their therapeutic effects. The healing balm distilled from the garments of the enfolding Presence cures our ills before they become fatal. The knowledge that we are never alone calms the troubled sea of our lives and speaks peace to our souls. A.W. Tozer Conclusion In the past few minutes I hope to have shown the meaning and significance of God’s Omnipresence, through my five points God Is Everywhere Present, God's Form Is Not Spread Out, Nobody Can Hide From God, and finally that This Is A Comforting Truth For The Believer. Before I finish I would like to present you an illustration of God’s omnipresence while I do not claim that this example is perfect by any means because God is outside of all things material like space. It helps to illustrate the point. Imagine, a sponge filled with water, water is present everywhere in the sponge and the sponge is filled with water, but the water is distinct from the sponge. God is everywhere at the same time he sees us. Thank you. | |
