| Neg History example Throughout history, rule by the people has failed. In Greece, popular sovereignty was attempted. Despite the war that broke them down, their political and economic stance had been destroyed. | |

| The Ayn Rand Center (ARC) is the public policy and outreach division of the Ayn Rand Institute, a non-profit organization. The Center’s mission is to advance individual rights (the rights of each person to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness) as the moral basis for a fully free, laissez-faire capitalist society. ARC is named after author and philosopher Ayn Rand (1905–1982), who is best known for her novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and for her original philosophy Objectivism.
The Center is located in Washington, D.C. and promotes the philosophical case for individual rights and laissez-faire capitalism to the public policy and business communities, the media and the general public, and to policy-makers. Toward this end, the Center sponsors writing and research; produces articles, op-eds, and other media content; hosts forums, panel discussions, and debates; reaches out to businessmen, elected officials, and policymakers; and assists victims of governmental abuse in their efforts to defend themselves on moral grounds. The Center promotes the principle of individual rights as a fundamental truth that each individual has a moral right to act on his own judgment for his own sake, so long as he does not violate that same right of others. The use of the term “moral” here is not accidental. The Center sees this principle not only as a political matter, but also, and more fundamentally, as a moral matter, as a requirement of human life.

| A good example here is the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. Iraq on its part tried to exert its power over the rights of the citizens of another nation, which endangered the popular sovereignty of Kuwait. | |

| The optimist would say the U.S. Senators and Congressmen represent their constituents, the President is the servant of the people. Athens, the people were the government. Plato's Republic, the guardians were the ultimate servants. (Is this OK?? And do I need to switch sections.. ) | |

| Here's an example where Individual rights beat out popular sovereignty.
In the 1750s the two greatest super powers of the world, France and England, clashed in one of the most epic struggles of history. Fighting on two different continents, this conflict has been given numerous names by historians, the European theater usually being called the Seven Years War, and the American theater receiving the title the French and Indian War. At the end of this brutal brawl, Britain emerged victorious. However, while giving ol' Britannica most of the world, it also put them over a million pounds in debt.
For the interests of the popular sovereignty, the English began levying taxes specifically on the Americans. While helping the majority of the people, this tread on the American's individual rights. The government of England ceased to be legitimate to them, and they pulled off one of the biggest up sets in history, beating the greatest military power the world had known and establishing a government devoted to protecting individual rights.

| In the American fight for independence, the people of America stood up for their individual rights instead of being stepped on by Briton. Choices about them, and they weren't allowed to have a say..., not even a representative in parlaiment.

| The majority of the people do not want nationalized health care. However the representatives in Washington and our elected president are forcing us to accept it.
This goes against popular sovereignty but I don't think it supports individual rights.

| In the Colosium in ancient Rome the will of the mob determined whether a gladiator would live or die. His individual rights were neglected to satisfy the desires of the majority. | |

| Individual rights
In the civil war 620,000 men died for African American slaves to get individual rights.

| In Iraq during the time of Sodom Hussein, The majority of the people were riled over by he and his friends, who were actually the minority. However they were able to oppress them into submission. This example is mainly against those who say Popular Sovereignty is more important because the majority will squish the minority.

| The constitution says "We that people.... do ordain and establish this constitution." These word that are in the preamble of the United States constitution show that the people have a say in our government. This showed that lots of people could express and act on their opinion. Most Southerners like the idea of popular sovereignty because they could expand to the other states like Kansas and bring slavery with them. The northerners didn't like that because they thought if the south got hold of Kansas they would keep expanding slavery and nothing would stop them.
Both the north and south set out to claim Kansas, but no one could completely claim it since the other side was occupying it. THe years were known as bloody Kansas. The biggest result of the popular sovereignty failing was the start of civil war.

| Political doctrine that allowed the settlers of U.S. federal territories to decide whether to enter the Union as free or slave states. It was applied by Sen. Stephen A. Douglas as a means to reach a compromise through passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Critics of the doctrine called it "squatter sovereignty." The resulting violence between pro- and antislavery factions (Bleeding Kansas) showed its failure as a workable compromise.

| The Newburgh Crisis is a great example of why we should not always go along with popuar sovriegnty. As he was walking one day, a group of soldiers in our american army came up to George Washintgon and asked him to forget the Congress and completely take ove America. He replied by saying that he would rather them revolt and abandon theur duty then have him lifted up above all others so that no one could hold him accountable. A good example of the dangers comes from a quote by Richard Maybury, "democracy (majority rule) is two wolves and a sheep trying to decide what is for dinner." | |
