Apologetics: If God is holy, why did He allow sin in the world?
Intro: Holy means that God is perfect in goodness and righteousness.
- Evil and sin are morally wrong things that we do that have definite consequences.
- If both of these defs are accepted as true, then how can both be true?
- What do we think of when we think of evil.
- Supreme evil is something that causes pain to innocents.
- Did God allow evil into the world?
- He allowed for the possibility of evil.
The problem this raises for theism is this. Atheists say if God is holy then he would wish to destroy evil, if God is Omnipotent then he would be able to destroy evil. But evil exists. Therefore a holy and all powerful God doesn’t exist.
Answer to such arguments:
- A world with Free will is far better than one without it. It is of moral value.
- J.S. Findlay states that God could make people freely will only to do good. However, this is clearly a contradiction and is not possible.
Westminster Confession states that- The free actions of men are predestined and free. Those who commit certain acts do so because they want to. And yet they were predestined to happen, the scriptures said they MUST happen.
Man has the liberty to do right, but not the ability.
- In the end, God made free will, in doing so he made evil possible, however, it is Humans who make evil actual.
- Evil in itself is not an entity just as darkness is not an entity. Evil is only the perversion of what was created by a holy God. In his grace God chose to save us from our perversions and hence he came upon this earth and defeated Evil. The outcome is already sure, we must only fight the fight.
Jude 1:3- Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.
The end is already secured, but we must fight the fight.
