It is all but impossible to format bullet points on here, so I apologize for how this looks. If it needs to be more written out or specific, just let me know.
Analyze
- Typical response of a Christian:
o We can get offended
• He uses the phrase “invent God” and we connect that to an anti-God perspective
• Not what he means
- What does he mean?
o “If”
• He is in no way asserting that God does not exist
• It is a hypothetical situation
○ “Necessary”
• He is referring to God as a necessary being
• Christians completely agree with this statement, God is indeed necessary
Respond
- I completely agree
o This is not a response, its an agreement
• Any Christian agrees with the statement
- God is necessary for human beings
o Society
• Morals and Law
All morals and law must be based on a standard
Humans could not have created this standard; it is inherent in everyone, not just those who are taught it.
Even law, which some claim is based on “order” is based on a standard. Not everyone agrees order is a good thing.
A higher authority is required for morals and law. Only something supernatural could have implanted an inherent standard in every human being. God is necessary for our society.
o The quote has been proven true in human history
• gods are invented all the time God is defined as: "One that is worshiped, idealized, or followed" by American Heritage Dictionary
• History is the story of the invention of God
Adam denied that God was all-powerful, and defied him
Adam invented himself a God, he worshipped and followed power; he wanted to be like God.
Man worships many things: pleasure, science, religion, charity.
We must have something to follow; we cannot function without a “god” as it were. We cannot function without some goal to follow. By definition, a goal we base our life around is a god.
